Comparing metal finishing
Metal finishing is a crucial part of the process at KMF. There are several processes available, including powder coating and metal painting. In this blog, we discuss the pros and cons of using both of these methods so that you have an overview and all the information you need to help you to decide which is the best solution for your requirements.
About Metal Finishing
The term ‘metal finishing’ is used to describe the process of placing some type of metal coating onto the surface of a metallic part. Metal finishing alters the material by making it more resistant to rust, corrosion and wear which prevents damage and increases durability.
KMF provides a range of specialist metal finishing services, all of which are subject to rigorous quality standards and checks. All of our metal finishes are fully RoHS compliant.
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a dry finishing process created by an electric charge. The charge causes a dry powder to fuse to the surface of the metal. It’s baked in a curing oven to make the coating smooth. The finish is hard and durable and is much tougher than conventional paint.
What is metal painting?
Metal painting is one of the most versatile and widely used metal finishing techniques and involves steps such as cleaning, priming, painting and drying to ensure a durable and quality finish. The paint acts as a barrier to the elements and offers lasting protection. It can be applied by brush, roller or spray painting and is commonly used for fencing, gates and garden furniture.
Benefits of powder coating
Powder coating is much more durable than conventional paint and provides a durable, attractive and even finish to metal surfaces – this makes it very versatile. It provides a layer of protection against corrosion and fading and is ideal if you want to achieve a specific colour match. Powder coating can also include special effects such as texture, glitter or marbled looks.
It’s also one of the most economical and long-lasting finishes for virtually any type of metal. As the coating is resistant to chipping, scratching and fading, it’s a good choice for parts that come into contact with sunlight and other environmental factors.
Benefits of metal painting
Metal painting is a visually appealing way to protect and enhance metal surfaces. It provides a protective coating for exposed or outdoor surfaces and offers a durable and professional quality finish.
It can be used as a primer, a protective coating or a decorative feature. Metal paint slows down and prevents oxidisation, making the metal less prone to corrosion or rust. It can also be heat resistant, meaning it can be used wherever the metal comes into contact with a hot environment.
Choosing powder coating or metal painting?
As paint fades over time, powder coated finishes are more durable. However, with exposure to moisture, UV and heat, both finishes will degrade.
Powder coating is less likely to chip or scratch and will generally guarantee longer-lasting protection when applied to metallic surfaces.
But whether you choose powder coating or metal painting largely depends on the use. Powder coatings are commonly used in all sectors for products such as outdoor metal cabinets or enclosures or electronic casings – wherever a durable finish is required. Whereas metal paint is more widely used for decorative purposes such as outdoor furniture and metal fencing.
KMF offers a range of metal finishing services including:
- Powder coating: offered as part of KMF’s complete metal manufacturing solution.
- Bead blasting: delivers a clean, bright, uniform matte texture.
- Grinding and deburring: Our machines are able to offer any specified finish and are capable of deburring pre-coated materials with no detriment to the surface finish.
- Silk screen and pad printing: this finishing process allows KMF to deliver various components and complete product assemblies to OEMs.
