What does an engineering Apprenticeship involve?

An Apprenticeship at KMF includes both practical and theory elements. The primary incentive for many who choose this option is that Apprentices earn as they learn.

Time spent in the commercial and production elements of the business is written into each training programme from the start. Spending three months in each department, trainees gain a comprehensive yet detailed set of manufacturing skills.

Apprentices at KMF now score significantly higher than the national average. We teach in classes of up to eight, with in-house lecturers having time to address any problems that may arise. Being on-site throughout the KMF apprenticeship also allows greater involvement in the broader aspects of the business.

Apprentices must work to a standard required by both KMF and the national curriculum. Daily work is observed, and a small amount of your own time should be set aside for revision, involvement in local community projects and charity fundraising.

Wider opportunities after graduating

The KMF programme offers more than world-class training. Apprentices get opportunities to improve their skills, experience new things and support the wider community. Examples of wider opportunities include competing at the infamous World Skills Competition and attending the annual apprentice out-of-bounds trip in France, with mountain biking, hiking and canyoning in Luchon.

During the programme, Apprentices also undertake an annual community challenge where they are asked to carry out a minimum of 50 hours of community service. This can include a broad range of community projects, from constructing a water feature for a local school to entertaining young carers on well-deserved breaks.
