What does an engineering apprenticeship involve?

An Apprenticeship at KMF includes both practical and theory elements. The primary incentive for many who choose this option is that Apprentices earn as they learn.

Our training program is designed with dedicated time for apprentices to work in various production departments, ensuring they experience each process on a rotational basis.

In the third year, this rotation extends to include opportunities in our commercial and administrative areas, providing a well-rounded understanding of our entire business.

By the end of the three-year program, apprentices gain a comprehensive set of manufacturing skills and knowledge, preparing them for success in a variety of roles.

Time spent in the commercial and production elements of the business is written into each training programme from the start. Spending three months in each department, trainees gain a comprehensive yet detailed set of manufacturing skills.

Apprentices at KMF now score significantly higher than the national average. We teach in classes of up to twelve, with in-house lecturers having time to address any problems that may arise. Being on-site throughout the KMF apprenticeship also allows greater involvement in the broader aspects of the business.

Apprentices must work to a standard required by both KMF and the national curriculum. Daily work is observed, and a small amount of your own time should be set aside for revision, involvement in local community projects and charity fundraising.

Additional apprentice opportunities

Examples of these opportunities include supporting KMF with STEM days at primary and secondary schools, competing in skills competitions, and participating in the annual Apprentice Outward Bound week.

Additionally, apprentices are encouraged to contribute to KMF’s charity fundraising efforts throughout the year, which may involve community projects, charity challenges, and events. These activities provide an excellent way for apprentices to develop communication skills and boost their confidence in environments beyond the workplace.

Upon successfully completing the apprenticeship program, apprentices are invited to the annual Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony, supported by Staffordshire County Council. We also host an Annual Apprentice Awards Ceremony, where apprentices and their families come together to celebrate their accomplishments throughout the program.
