KMF Group Ltd is a finalist for the SEMTA Skills Innovation of the Year Award 2017. This award acknowledges and celebrates a creative and innovative approach to investment in skills and training that has a significant positive impact on people, businesses, or the wider manufacturing sector.

KMF is recognised for this award because of its outstanding Young Engineer of the Year competition (YEOTY). YEOTY aims to partner industry with education to raise aspirations and capture the imagination of our young people and enhance their career development.

Over the last four years YEOTY has reached more than 17,000 students, worked with 27 high schools and, alongside more than 50 local sponsors, invested around £550,000 in encouraging young people to take up a career in engineering and STEM projects.

Previous projects include building Greenpower kit cars and launching balloons into near space.

As part of the judging process, SEMTA representatives visited the KMF Precision Sheet Metal plant and spoke to previous YEOTY participants and current KMF apprentice, Jonathan Sharman.

Jonathan told SEMTA about his experience winning Young Engineer of the Year 2014: "In 2014 I entered KMF's young engineer of the year competition. I absolutely loved the competition. I gained some great experience working with a diverse team, with a diverse group of skills, to strict deadlines- we all had a different role to play. Participating in YEOTY brought me out of my shell. I believe the experience has made me more confident at work and improved my time management."

They also visited loyal YEOTY participant, St Joseph's college where students demonstrated their impressive Lego robot skills as part of this year's Young Engineers competition. Previous challenges included the 3D print and Space projects (Please visit KMF's Facebook or YouTube Pages for Videos)

The SEMTA competition concludes with an awards ceremony at the London Hilton where MF faces tough competition with competitors of Activate Business School & BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and the University of Bradford.
