Kayleigh Simm: CBM Apprentice of the Year!

kayleigh simm apprentice of the year 2024

The Confederation of British Metalforming (CBM) represents the interests of more than 200 UK manufacturers of fasteners, forgings, pressings, cold rolled and sheet-metal products. It held its prestigious awards last week.and KMF’s very own Kayleigh Simm beat off competition from fellow apprentices across the UK to become the CBM’s Apprentice Of The Year!

The awards are an annual vehicle for promoting and celebrating the very best of the UK’s metalforming sector, and they were held in front of 200 guests at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham last week. A delegation from KMF, including Group Managing Director Gareth Higgins and People & Culture Manager Jenny Johnston, enjoyed an inspirational talk by Dave Heeley OBE, and saw Kayleigh presented with her award by Carl Chinn MBE, Midlands historian, writer and broadcaster, and who is a well-known champion of manufacturing.

Third-year apprentice Kayleigh impressed judges with her progress within the company, her leadership qualities, and her ability to engage with her fellow team members at KMF and also those looking to become an apprentice in the future. Kayleigh has championed apprenticeships and vocational learning since joining us in 2022, and typical of her focused mindset, Kayleigh is now setting her sights on undertaking a degree in manufacturing engineering.

Kayleigh is the only female in her apprentice cohort here at KMF, and her time with us so far has seen the 20-year-old lead a KMF team at numerous school and college career fairs, as well as being an outstanding apprentice advocate on our Apprenticeship Open Day that attracted over 140 visitors recently. Kayleigh was on a CBM Apprentice Of The Year shortlist of three that also included KMF’s Ashley Gaunt. KMF were also on a shortlist of four organisations for the Company Of The Year award, too.

Obviously, we are immensely proud at KMF to have two of the three candidates on the Apprentice Of The Year shortlist come from within our company, and we think that not only does it show our commitment to our apprenticeship programme, but also the drive and passion of our apprentices for a career in engineering, too.
